Peter Underhill (ASCAP) is a composer and pianist from Spokane, Washington. His works reflect his interest in developing constraint techniques to arrive at surprising musical materials, the use of computer-assisted composition software, and the creation of organic musical forms. Peter earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition and Piano Performance from Whitworth University and completed his M.M. in Composition at the University of South Carolina. He is currently earning his DMA in Composition at the University of Georgia.
His catalog includes works such as Scablands for sax quartet, electronics, and video (inspired by the Channeled Scablands of the Pacific Northwest), Simple Sabotage for chamber orchestra and electronics (a setting of the declassified government document of the same name), a song set for soprano based on the poetry of Sara Teasdale, a commission for the University of South Carolina Wind Ensemble, and Visible Mending – a piece for speaking/singing piano trio inspired by his friends and their practices of artistic garment restoration.

Some general information concerning how to commission a composer can be found at the website of The American Composers Forum. If you’re not sure about commissioning a piece, consider contacting Peter to put together a commissioning consortium – a larger group of performers/organizations who co-commission a new piece of music!
